Most patients aren't sure what's expected of them before an admission, so here it is step by step. You can now do the whole thing online.
The 48-hour head start
Pre-admission is the paperwork before a surgical admission. We ask you to complete it at least 48 hours beforehand. On the day we can then settle you into the ward and prepare you for surgery instead of working through forms.
Once you have what's listed below, the form itself takes a few minutes.
Online is quickest. If you've been admitted here before we already hold most of it and only ask what's changed.

What you need, and who gives it to you
The information comes from three places.
Your surgeon's rooms
When your surgeon decides to admit you, their rooms book the theatre date and open your pre-admission with the codes already filled in. You'll get an SMS with the link. The codes are:
- The diagnosis code (ICD-10)
- The procedure code (RPL / CPT)
- The practice number of your specialist (PCN)
If the rooms gave you the codes on paper instead, you can type them in yourself.
Your medical aid
Your medical aid has to issue an authorisation number before the procedure. Once you've submitted your pre-admission you can download a motivation letter (your details, the codes, the practice number and your surgeon's clinical motivation) and send it to the scheme. Check what your plan does and doesn't cover.
If you're not on a medical aid we'll give you an estimate to pay on or before admission.
You, the patient
Add the authorisation number to your pre-admission when you have it. You'll also need photos of the patient's:
- ID, passport or birth certificate
- Medical aid card
Do it online
The whole thing from your phone in about ten minutes. You sign in with your mobile number; there's no account or password.
- Photograph your ID and medical aid card. We check the photo is readable while the card is still in your hand
- We read the details off the card so you don't have to type them, and you confirm what we read
- Add your authorisation number when your medical aid issues it
- Come back next time and we only ask what's changed
Or on paper
If you'd rather not use a phone, admissions will send you the printed A4 form to complete and bring along with your documents.
Either way you need the same things: your surgeon's codes, your authorisation number, and copies of your ID and medical aid card.

No authorisation number, no procedure
Medical aids won't fund a procedure without an authorisation number issued beforehand. If you're struggling to get one, call admissions on 011 593 4483 before your procedure date rather than on the day.
Ready when you are
Complete your pre-admission at least 48 hours before your procedure. Our admissions and accounts teams would rather answer a question early than solve a problem on the day.
