Our TheatresThirteen theatres, built for modern surgery
Our theatre complex supports a focus on minimally invasive, image-guided, robotic and tele-surgery procedures — the techniques that shorten recovery and improve outcomes.
Across six purpose-built theatre types.
One of the few hospitals in the country to offer two.
The Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, on site.
Purpose-built, not repurposed
Each theatre is configured for the discipline that uses it — which is why our surgeons can work faster, more accurately and with less disruption to the patient.
Interventional & General Scope
Two state-of-the-art interventional and general scope theatres that do not expose patients to the main theatre complex — dramatically reducing anxiety.
Orthopaedic Theatres
Four sophisticated orthopaedic theatres, enabling industry-leading orthopaedic surgeons to perform world-class care.
Neurosurgical Theatre
Our superior neurological theatre is the home of world-class neurosurgery at JSH.
Specialised Theatres
Three specialised theatres: two fully equipped hybrid theatres for our vascular surgeons, and a custom theatre for Da Vinci robotic surgery.
Cardiothoracic & Cathlab
Two theatres equipped for endoscopic, minimally invasive and robotic techniques, allowing a wide variety of cardiothoracic procedures.
Urology Scope Theatre
A theatre bed that allows unrestricted access to the patient from all sides, increasing the accuracy and speed of care.
The Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System
Johannesburg Surgical Hospital is home to the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System for general, urology and cardiothoracic surgery — offering superior positive margin rates, improved functional outcomes and lower complication rates than current interventions.
As a centre of excellence, our objective is to build on a platform of world-class clinical services for the South African population. With this technology we offer the full scope of treatment services for prostate cancer and other appropriate urology, general surgery and cardiothoracic indications.
Imaging inside the operating room
Our hybrid theatres integrate diagnostic imaging and cardiac catheterisation directly into theatre. Cardiac specialists, cardiothoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons, anaesthetists and radiologists work together in one environment that provides three-dimensional perspectives — pinpointing exactly the areas surgery requires.
